WHAT IS IT?
In 1606 an attempt was made to blow up the houses of parliment
in London England.. Guy fawkes a member of the gang was caught
tried and executed.
Every year on Nov 5th in Britan and ex-pat communities
around the world celebraty this event by buliding a bonfire and burning it
along with a effigy of mr Fawkes ..
If you grew up in The UK or in any British community around
the world you
will not have forgotten the excitement you felt on "Bonfire Night" The wonder
of the
fireworks, the heat and sparks from the bonfire, the "Guy"consumed by flames
and the sausages and baked potatoes cooked in the smoky embers.
We would like to continue to create, in the children of this
generation, the same
feeling of awe and excitement, so that they too will be able to pass this to
future
generations.

For many years The Round Table organized Bonfire Night at St. Pauls
School and
in later years at S.P.A.C. in Santo Amaro.
Unfortunately a few years ago we
felt we were
unable to continue with the event due to the lack of sponsorship and the huge
increase in
the cost of the fireworks.
This year (1999) though, we are making an all out effort
to put Bonfire Night back on the British and international community calendar. The date has
been set :-
|
We are looking for a suitable free site
to hold the event.
In the past Bonfire Night has attracted crowds of over six hundred
people of all ages and raised sums of up to U$10.000 for charity. It was one of the major
events on the British and international community calendar.
The main attraction is the firework display, which usually takes
place just after dark at about 7.30. The other main attraction is a huge bonfire on which the
effigy of Guy Fawkes is burned. These are accompanied by a variety of activities and games
for
children and adults which help to raise money for our charities, many of
which have had
stalls at the event calling attention to their cause. There is always a
tombola or bottle stall
where people can win prizes and a raffle with donated prizes of all kinds,

WHO ATTENDS
It is a great family event attracting people from the international
community and families of children attending international schools.
The games and activities start at about 4pm and the fun continues
until about 10pm with finishing the band or disco.
The lighting of the bonfire and a fierwork display when it gets dark
There is often a meal of bangers, beans and mash - sausages, baked beans
and mashed potato

HOW YOU CAN HELP
We produce a small program for the event which has advertising space
for
sponsors. This year we will produce it early to use as a means to publicise
the event.
If you feel that you could help, in even the smallest way, with
sponsorship or
possibly with prizes of some kind we at The Round Table and the children of
the
charities we support would be eternally grateful.
Even if you feel that you can not help with sponsorship, do not
forget to come to
the event! Bring your family and friends to Bonfire night for a traditional
festive
occasion.
